Support SFT’s Parliamentary Outreach Campaign

Dear Friends,

SFT Canada Lobby Team 2011Last week, SFT brought Canada’s election fever to Toronto’s “Little Tibet”. We hosted an all-candidates debate for the Parkdale-High Park riding, home to more than 5,000 Tibetans and the largest Tibetan constituency in Canada.

The event was a huge success! Candidates from the three major parties attended the debate: Taylor Train (Conservative Party), Peggy Nash (NDP), and incumbent, Gerard Kennedy (Liberal Party). More than a hundred Tibetans and supporters packed the venue to hear the candidates speak and to ask questions about how they will support Tibetans – in Canada and Tibet – if elected to office.

This year, SFT Canada led the second Tibet Lobby Day in Ottawa before March 10th, Tibetan Uprising Day, and we’ve recently launched a monthly newsletter called the Tibetan Citizen for Federal MPs to stay up-to-date about developments inside Tibet.

The candidate’s debate, combined with these initiatives, is part of SFT’s Parliamentary Outreach Campaign, designed to build support on Parliament Hill for human rights and freedom in Tibet and to cultivate a network of young Tibetans and students with the skills to engage their political representatives.

At SFT, we know that in order to build the most effective movement for Tibetan freedom, we need to be in the streets, and in the halls of political power.

This election is an opportunity to generate support for Tibet in Parliament. Find out which candidates are running in your riding at: http://www.sftcanada.org

After Monday’s vote, please consider sending a short note of congratulations to your winning candidate and introduce yourself as a Tibetan or Tibet supporter in his/her riding. Together, we can ensure that our elected representatives are well informed on the issue, so that we can maximize opportunities to build Parliamentary support for Tibet.

With hope,

Tenzin Lobsang Wangkhang
SFT Canada – National Director
