For the first time since 2003, the Nepalese government has forcibly repatriated three Tibetanrefugees to Tibet in violation of its own obligations under international law. The three Tibetans, all in their early twenties were forcibly handed over to Chinese border police in early June. Two of them have since been jailed in Tibet. Nepal’s actions could set a devastating precedent for the more than one thousand Tibetans who each year attempt to flee Tibet into Nepal.
Students for a Free Tibet Canada organized a demonstration outside the Honorary Nepalese Consulate in Toronto yesterday with a few dozen Tibetan and Tibet supporters coming out to raise their voice. Our voices were indeed heard, and we were told that the Honorary Consular General knew we were there. We also received a lot of support from people walking by, including several who joined us in protesting after hearing about the issue. We were able to do a lot of outreach by talking to pedestrians, and handed out tons of Students for a Free Tibet pamphlets. A HUGE thank you to everyone who came out! Below is a video from yesterday’s protest in Toronto in front of the Honorary Nepalese Consulate.
